USDZ Viewer

Open Apple USDZ files on Windows, Android or any browser, with PBR materials and textures. Free, no upload.

Open USDZ files on any device

This USDZ viewer opens Apple's .usdz files in any modern browser, including on Windows, Android and Linux, where there is usually no built-in way to look at them. Drop the file on the page to see the model with its materials and textures. Nothing is uploaded.

It also opens the other USD file types: .usda (text), .usdc (binary) and .usd.

What USDZ is

USD (Universal Scene Description) was developed by Pixar to assemble the huge scenes in its films, and was released as open source in 2016. In 2018 Apple and Pixar introduced USDZ, a packaged form of USD, as the format for AR Quick Look on iPhone and iPad. In 2023 Pixar, Apple, Adobe, Autodesk and NVIDIA formed the Alliance for OpenUSD to standardize USD further.

A .usdz file is an uncompressed ZIP archive. Inside is a USD scene (usually a binary .usdc file) plus the PNG or JPEG textures it uses. Keeping the archive uncompressed lets a device read the contents in place without unpacking first.

.usdz
The packaged archive: scene plus textures in one file. What AR Quick Look and most stores use.
.usdc
Binary USD scene ('crate' format). Compact and fast to load.
.usda
Text USD scene. Human-readable, useful for inspecting and hand-editing.
.usd
Either of the above; the extension does not say which.

Where USDZ files come from

On Apple devices: Reality Composer, Reality Converter, the Object Capture photogrammetry feature in macOS, and scanning apps on iPhones and iPads with LiDAR all produce USDZ. Online stores offer USDZ files so customers can place furniture or products in their room with AR Quick Look.

Elsewhere: Blender, Maya, Houdini, Substance 3D tools and NVIDIA Omniverse read and write USD, and the format is spreading through film, games and industrial design pipelines.

If you received a .usdz on a Windows PC or Android phone, or you want to check a store's AR model before publishing it, this page lets you see it without an Apple device.

To create a USDZ for AR Quick Look from a web model, use GLB to USDZ.

What this viewer supports

Meshes and their PBR materials (base color, metallic, roughness, normal and other maps) with the textures packed in the archive are shown. These cover the typical product model or scan.

USD is a large and complex system, and not every feature is supported here. Variants (for example, a sofa offered in several fabrics within one file), complex layering and composition between files, and Reality Composer behaviors, physics and audio are not handled. Simple transform and skeletal animations are played. If a file uses these features, what you see may be a single variant or an incomplete scene.

USDZ and GLB: the two AR formats

On the web, 3D and AR content usually ships in two versions: USDZ for iPhone and iPad, and GLB for Android and browsers. The two formats store similar PBR materials, so models convert between them well.

Use "Download as" to save a USDZ model as GLB, glTF, OBJ, STL or PLY. GLB keeps materials and textures in one file. OBJ and STL keep only the geometry.

To make the Android and web version of an AR model, use USDZ to GLB.

Frequently asked questions

How do I open a USDZ file on Windows or Android?

Drop it on this page. The USDZ viewer runs in Chrome, Edge, Firefox and other modern browsers, so you do not need an iPhone or a Mac.

Is my USDZ file uploaded?

No. The archive is unpacked and displayed by your browser on your own device. Nothing is sent to a server.

Can I open .usda and .usdc files too?

Yes. The USDZ viewer also opens .usda, .usdc and .usd files. Textures referenced by a loose .usda or .usdc file are stored outside it, so those may not appear.

Why does my USDZ look different from AR Quick Look?

AR Quick Look uses Apple's own renderer and real-world lighting, and supports USD features such as variants and Reality Composer behaviors that this viewer does not. Geometry and basic materials should match.

Does the USDZ viewer play animations?

Yes, simple transform and skeletal animations stored in the file. Pick a clip from the list. Reality Composer behaviors are not played.

How do I make a USDZ from another format?

Convert it. The converter turns GLB and other formats into USDZ in the browser, with materials converted to PBR and textures embedded (scaled down to 2048 px at most). USDZ output never contains animation. The result opens in AR Quick Look on iPhone and iPad.
